It was a rainy week....but it was a FUN week full of learning!  We continue to learn our classroom routines and explore our classroom environment. The students have been learning how to independently unpack their backpacks and take care of their belongings, (take out snack, lunch and folders and put them in their designated places), hang their backpacks and coats.  Teaching responsibility is a big part of preschool.  This is a great time to start assigning your children simple chores at home, such as, putting their shoes away, cleaning up their toys or clearing their dishes from the dinner table. Accomplishing these tasks helps children feel a sense of pride and they love feeling like helpers!

Throughout the week, we practiced counting 1-10 and sorting by color. We are also learning to recognize the numbers 1-10.  These concepts occur over and over throughout our school day.

 

Counting practice continued with one of our favorite activities this week...Counting Cakes!

 

 

The water table was a big hit this week as well!  We explored the properties of water which provided us with a platform for lots of language!  We used descriptive words such as wet, cold and slippery.  We also noticed which objects float in the water and which items sink.

 

 

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. was one of our favorite circle time stories. It was a great way to start exploring the alphabet.  We practiced recognizing the letters in our names and will continue practicing how to write our names. Did you hear that we went "Fishing for Letters"?

 

 

Our letter exploration led to our first focused study of the "Letter of the Week". While learning about the Letter B, we created a lengthy list of words that begin with B (bird, bubbles, bowl, balloon, blocks, bread, boat, etc).  Ask your child if they can recall any of the words that begin with B!  We even used our B words to create a memory game.  This was a great way to practice turn taking and also to get some extra practice with the letter B! 

 

 

This rainy week did provide us with a nice opportunity to spend some quiet time in the library...

...but we'll be happy to see the sunshine return next week so that we can have some more fun on the playground!

We had such a fun first week of school!  We were so happy to see so many smiling faces arrive at our door. Everyone was excited and ready to get started in our new classroom.  We have spent the first week getting to know each other and becoming familiar with our daily routines.  The students are learning the layout of our classroom and how to use classroom materials.  We are also learning about school safety and classroom rules.   We are off to a great start!  Please take a peek at what we've been up to this week!

We found a cicada on the playground!  We brought the bug inside for a closer look and we looked up some interesting facts about cicadas.  We even heard a recording of what a cicada sounds like.
